RICE Treatment for Sprained Leg Cases
While you were playing football, you suddenly sprained your ankle, and the pain you experienced was so painful. If this situation occurs, you should stop doing any strenuous activities and do RICE treatment immediately.
What is RICE treatment?
RICE is not a treatment where you have to eat a lot of rice. Instead, RICE means Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation.
Depending on the type and degree of injury you are experiencing. If it is critical, you should consult a specialist or massage therapy methods may help.
The purpose of treatment is to reduce pain and swelling, promote ligament healing and restore your ankle function.
However, for early treatment, the RICE method is beneficial. Let's learn this method:
- Rest: Avoid engaging in activities that can cause pain, swelling and discomfort
- Ice: Use ice packs immediately for 15 to 20 minutes and repeat every 2 or 3 hours.
- Compression: To reduce swelling, apply an elastic bandage on the swollen leg and apply it until the swelling subsides. Do not wrap too tightly
- Elevation: Elevate or raise your legs higher than your chest to reduce swelling
Do you want to use medications to reduce pain?
You can get pain relief at the pharmacy counter to reduce the pain experienced by sprained legs. You can get ibuprofen or naproxen sodium or even acetaminophen (Tylenol). All of them are effective in reducing pain.
If you only have sprained feet that are mild and not too severe, you can still treat them at home through this RICE method. However, every injury suffered should be reported to the doctor in advance to detect if there is a more serious internal injury.
The doctor will perform various tests such as X-ray, MRI, CT scan or ultrasound. This test is to ensure that there are no broken bones and to get more in-depth information on ligament injuries. Only after the doctor confirms that your feet are suffering from regular sprains can you treat your feet at home under doctor's advice.
