Using Phone Too Long Can Worsen Your Sleep Pattern

Checking up your phone is the first thing you do when you wake up. Is it true?

It is like a daily routine, and it is like a mandatory for us to look up our social media first thing before getting out of bed to take a shower. Worse, if yesterday you slept late devoutly playing with your phone and waking up again open up your social media again.

Despite the development and sophistication of the platform for human beings to connect, human beings themselves may not be aware of the impact of social media on their quality of life. How can unrestricted use of social media lead to a decline in quality of life?

 

Severe sleep patterns

Through a recent study, researchers found that adolescents who spend 3 hours or more a day using social media, will reduce their sleep quality. In other words, their sleep patterns are getting worse.

Adolescents who regularly use this social media will have more than twice the tendency to sleep more than 11 pm during school nights. Also, they tend to wake up in the middle of the night and find it difficult to go back to sleep as well as challenging to get up in the morning.

 

One-fifth of social media users are 'very high."

Through the study, the teenagers involved reported the time used by them in using social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and WhatsApp. They also reported their sleeping habits, including what time they slept and woke up during school nights and weekends.

Data from the study have detailed that one in five teenagers use social media for more than 5 hours a day, and it is classified as a 'very high' social media user. This number has represented 21% of the total study respondents.

 

Lack of sleep, lack of academic achievement

 

This study focuses more on habits that are commonly done during school nights, as sleeping late during school hours can have an impact on poor academic and emotional performance. For general knowledge, sleep deprivation has been associated with unsatisfactory academic performance as it slows down memory and disrupts learning activities.

 

According to Dr Bernadka Dubicka, children and teenagers are advised to avoid using any gadgets an hour before bed. This will help them to sleep better at night. This is because the blue light produced from the screen of a phone or tablet can affect the body clock and hormones that help us to sleep.

 

After this, try to keep any phone or gadget away from your hands for at least an hour before bed. For parents, control the use of gadgets by your children so that they do not use them excessively. The gadget itself is not harmful, but the way it is used should be taken into consideration.
